Las Luces
Film, 2015, 6min

Every Christmas, in a busy village near the northern reaches of Argentina, a humble family home transforms into a multitudinous display of blinking festive lights. Jorge Gervasi and his son Jorgito have made an annual tradition of converting their house into a luminous Christmas monument, which their neighbors call “la casa de las luces”—the house of lights.

This contemplative, black-and-white project was conceived by Argentinian directing duo Manuel Abramovich and Juan Renau, who tease out the theatricality of the Gervasis’ self-appointed mission to enliven their community with the spirit of Christmas.

The Lights, Abramovich and Renau observe, is a metaphor for filmmaking: “To watch Jorge and Jorgito sitting in their home surrounded by their creation is like looking at ourselves in the mirror, sitting in a darkened movie theater while this film is being shown. And just like the Gervasis plan next year’s lights, we walk out of the theater thinking about our next film.” NOWNESS
